Ondo warns residents against uncertified substances amid death of over 25 youth

The Ondo State Government has warned residents of the state against the consumption of unapproved substances, herbal drinks, concoctions, and other products not certified as safe for human consumption.

The stance of the state government became imperative following a tragic incident in Odigbo Local Council Area of the state, which resulted in the loss of over 30 lives with about 50 youths hospitalized

In a statement signed by Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Idowu Ajanaku, the government urged members of the public to exercise utmost caution and desist from patronising or consuming substances of doubtful origin.

Ajanaku, who stressed that the safety, health, and wellbeing of the people remain key priorities, cautioned sellers, producers, and distributors of uncertified substances to immediately desist from such practices.

The commissioner noted that the production, sale, and distribution of unapproved substances pose serious risks to public health and may attract appropriate sanctions in accordance with the law.

While frowning against drug abuse among youths, the government warned citizens against the unauthorised use or consumption of substances capable of causing serious health complications or death.

Residents were also advised to obtain medicines and other consumable products only from authorised and regulated outlets and to seek professional medical advice rather than resorting to unverified remedies or substances.

The government disclosed that it is currently investigating the Odigbo incident to establish the actual cause of the deaths with assurance that relevant government agencies are working to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The government also appealed to residents to remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified information capable of causing unnecessary panic.

The statement: “The State Government commends the proactive intervention of the Chairman of Odigbo Local Government Area, Hon. Taiwo Adegboye, in responding promptly to the situation and supporting efforts aimed at protecting the lives and wellbeing of residents,

“The Government assures the people of Ondo State that necessary measures are being taken to safeguard public health and prevent a recurrence of such incidents.

“Citizens are encouraged to promptly report suspicious activities involving the production, sale or distribution of dangerous, illegal or unapproved substances to the appropriate authorities.

“The Government emphasises that protecting lives and promoting a safe and healthy society is a collective responsibility that requires the cooperation of all residents.”
