Police arrest POS operator for allegedly aiding ₦4m ransom payment

The Delta State Police Command has arrested a female Point of Sale (POS) operator for her alleged involvement in facilitating the payment of a ₦4 million ransom to kidnappers.

The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Bright Edafe, confirmed the arrest to journalists in Asaba.

While explaining the circumstances surrounding the incident, Edafe cautioned POS operators to avoid engaging in financial transactions exceeding ₦500,000, warning that such actions could implicate them in criminal activities.

He noted, “Any transaction above ₦500,000 can land you in serious trouble. Don’t become a tool for kidnappers to collect ransom, as every such transaction will be traced back to you.”

According to Edafe, the arrested POS operator allegedly facilitated the transfer of ₦4 million on behalf of kidnappers but earned only ₦40,000 as commission.

“Imagine that: she received ₦4 million from the kidnappers, and her profit was just ₦40,000. You may think you’re just doing business, but you could find yourself spending time in prison before your lawyer gets you out,” he said.

The arrest highlights growing concerns about the use of financial networks, including POS operators, in enabling ransom payments. Edafe urged POS operators to act responsibly to avoid being implicated in criminal activities.

The police did not disclose the identity of the operator or the location of the arrest.
