Police operatives in Niger State have arrested two suspects for vandalising electric cables at different locations in Sarkin Pawa, Munya Local Council.
The spokesperson for the state Police Command, SP Wasiu Abiodun, disclosed that on June 10, 2025, at about 11:50 p.m., police operatives attached to Sarkin Pawa, in collaboration with vigilante members, apprehended two suspects, Mohammed Isah, 25, and Ishiaku Ali, 30, both of Kwagana village in the Beni area of Sarkin Pawa.
Abiodun explained that the suspects were caught during a routine patrol along the Beni/Sarkin Pawa road while vandalising over 100 metres of electric cable. They were using a white Lexus vehicle with registration number RKD 84 AU. A cable cutter and the vandalised cables were recovered as exhibits.
The suspects reportedly confessed to planning to sell the stolen cables to a buyer in Abuja. They have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Minna for further investigation and prosecution.
In a related incident, Abiodun revealed that on June 12, 2025, at about 5:00 p.m., security personnel at the Federal University of Technology (FUT) Minna, Bosso campus, arrested Ibrahim Aliyu, 24, of Angwan-Kanawa, Bosso.
Aliyu was handed over to the Bosso Police Division on June 11, 2025, at about 7:30 a.m., after he was found to have trespassed into the university premises, damaged the iron door protector of the generator room, and stolen about 16 metres of armoured cable valued at N2 million.
“On June 12, 2025, at about 2:00 p.m., the suspect was apprehended by community members and vigilantes at Angwan-Masa Bosso while attempting to sell the stolen cable. He confessed during interrogation to committing the crime alone, peeling the armoured rubber covering, concealing the cable in a sack, and taking it home,” Abiodun stated.He added that investigations are ongoing and the suspect would soon be charged to court.
