The Yobe State Police Command has busted a motorcycle-snatching syndicate with the arrest of two suspects in Fika and Jakusko Local Government Areas of the state.
The command said all stolen motorcycles linked to the suspects were recovered by divisional police operatives between May 23 and May 25, 2026.
In a statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, the police said the operations were part of ongoing efforts to rid the state of criminal elements and strengthen public safety.
“In our sustained effort to rid the state of criminal elements and strengthen public safety, the police have recorded significant operational successes across various divisions within the period under review,” the statement said.
Abdulkarim added that the achievements underscored the command’s commitment to intelligence-driven policing and proactive crime prevention strategies across the 17 local government areas of the state, including border communities with the Niger Republic.
He explained that in one of the operations carried out on May 25, 2026, at about 5:30 p.m., one Alhaji Mamman, 27, of Kaliyari Fulani Settlement in Bursari LGA, reported at Garin Alkali Division that his red KASEA motorcycle was stolen after he parked it near a shop along Gwiokura Road.
“Upon receipt of the report, police operatives immediately swung into action and intensified surveillance operations,” Abdulkarim said.
He disclosed that one Yusai Mamman, 20, of Belkol Fulani Settlement via Girgir in Jakusko LGA, was arrested while riding the stolen motorcycle along Jakusko Road.
According to the police spokesman, the suspect confessed during interrogation to stealing the motorcycle, adding that investigations were ongoing and the suspect would be charged to court upon completion.
Similarly, on May 24, 2026, at about 5 p.m., a distress call was received at Fika Division regarding the snatching of another motorcycle.
Preliminary investigations revealed that on May 23, 2026, at about 3:30 p.m., a commercial motorcyclist picked up a passenger from Maiduwa Village to Ngalda Town in Fika LGA, where the passenger allegedly dispossessed him of his red Boxer motorcycle valued at N400,000.
Following the swift dissemination of information to neighbouring communities and security operatives, alongside support from local vigilante groups in Gulani LGA, one Mohammed Garba of Bursali Village in Gulani LGA was arrested in connection with the crime.
The complainant reportedly identified the suspect, who also confessed to the offence. Police said investigations were ongoing and the suspect would be arraigned after preliminary investigations.
In a related development, operatives attached to A Division in Damaturu rescued a newborn baby girl believed to be about one day old after she was found abandoned at Kallalawa Village on May 25, 2026.
The police said the infant was immediately taken to the Special Baby Care Unit of the General Hospital, Damaturu, where medical examination confirmed that she was in stable condition.
The baby was later handed over to the Social Welfare Department for proper care and protection, while investigations have commenced to trace the mother and determine the circumstances surrounding the abandonment.
Commissioner of Police, Usman Kanfani, directed officers and men of the command to sustain the ongoing crackdown on criminal activities across the state.
He also commended residents and local vigilante groups for their continued support and cooperation with security agencies.
The command urged members of the public to remain vigilant and continue providing timely and credible information to aid policing efforts.
