The police in Ogun State are investigating an incident involving officers from the Kemta Police Station in Abeokuta, and an operative of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

The development followed a viral video on social media alleging police brutality against a civil defence officer.

Spokesperson for the Command, Oluseyi Babaseyi, stated, yesterday, that the command was aware of the incident and would work with the NSCDC to determine what exactly transpired.

According to him, the matter has been referred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a thorough probe.

The command added that the investigation would examine the circumstances surrounding the incident to ensure justice and apply sanctions where necessary.

It also reaffirmed the existing collaboration between security agencies operating in the state.

The police further reassured residents that security agencies in the state maintain cordial working relationship in the interest of public safety.

“The Ogun State Police Command is aware of the incident that occurred at Government Technical College involving officers from Kemta Police Station and wishes to inform the public that the matter is under investigation, having been referred to the SCID.

“The Command will, in collaboration with NSCDC, examine the circumstances surrounding the incident exhaustively to ensure due process is followed with a view to apply sanction as appropriate and avoid a repeat of such incident,” he stated.

According to a yet-to-be-confirmed report by Independent Reporters on Facebook, the incident occurred on March 5 at Government Technical College Abeokuta, Ogun State, where officers attached to Kemta Police Station were accused of assaulting a civil defence officer and firing tear gas within the school premises.

Witnesses claimed the crisis began after a man operating a car wash, who had earlier been accused of injuring a student, was reportedly released by the police despite a formal complaint.

The situation allegedly escalated when some students confronted the suspect, prompting the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Kemta Police Station to intervene.
