The Delta State Police Command said it is investigating the murder of Sam Onobua Itkpenye, a representative of the Sand Beach in Adagbrasa Ugolo community, Okpe Local Government Area.

The incident occurred on the 6th of September, 2024, and has since prompted a stir of concern and demands for justice from the public.

Police spokesman in Delta State Bright Edafe disclosed this in a video via his X, formerly Twitter account.

He said preliminary investigations have revealed that the interim chairman of the Sand Beach went to the site where he engaged in a heated argument with the deceased.

“The disagreement reportedly centered on the chairman’s entitlements, specifically whether he was entitled to one or two trailer loads of sand. The argument quickly escalated into a violent confrontation,” he said.

“On September 7, 2024, the interim chairman reported to the DPO that he had been involved in a fight with the deceased.

“He appeared at the station severely injured, with wounds to his head, back, and other parts of his body. The DPO promptly issued him a medical report form and instructed him to seek immediate treatment at the nearest hospital.

“Later that same day, Prince Onobua Itkpenye, the brother of the deceased, reported to the police that his younger brother had been assaulted and murdered by the interim chairman of the community. In response, the DPO visited the hospital where the chairman was supposed to have received treatment. However, it was discovered that the chairman had left after a brief session of medical care.”

He added that the interim chairman is at large as the Delta State Commissioner of Police has assured the public that justice will be served.

The police commissioner has directed the DPO to exhaust all efforts to locate and apprehend the fugitive suspect.

“The police are determined to uncover the true cause of the fight and ensure that all responsible parties are held accountable,” Edafe said.

“The Delta State Police Command is appealing to anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of the interim chairman to come forward. They have emphasized that justice must be served in the case of Sam Onobua Itkpenye, and the community is urged to remain calm as the investigation continues.”
