Police recover N3m stolen from Ghana-based businessman in Bayelsa

IGP Kayode Egbetokun

The police have recovered N3 million that was forcibly transferred from the account of Nigerian businessman Liberty Kelechi Isaac, who is based in Ghana.

The transfer was carried out by police officers on stop-and-search duty in Bayelsa.

Isaac had returned to Nigeria in August and was travelling to attend a friend’s traditional wedding when police officers in the Udi area of Bayelsa accosted him and forced him to unlock his phone for a search.

After unlocking his phone, an alert of N10 million came in, which prompted the officers to point guns at him, forcing him to transfer N3 million in two tranches to the account they provided.

When he refused, they brutalised him, which led Isaac to comply.

Later, the victim contacted his lawyer, obtained all the account numbers, and approached the AIG Zone 16 and the Commissioner of Police in Bayelsa for investigation and swift action.

Isaac, who briefed journalists on the development in Owerri, commended the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), Zone 16, Bayelsa, Paul Alifa Omata, and his officers for recovering the money.

He disclosed that he was invited over the weekend with his lawyer and handed the N3 million on bond.

Isaac appealed to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, to prosecute the officers involved in the act to serve as a deterrent to others.

He praised the efforts of the zone’s leadership for the swift action, adding that it showed him that he could have confidence in the Nigerian police.
