The Imo State Police Command has reaffirmed its ban on the sale, use, and distribution of pyrotechnics, commonly known as knockouts or bangers, as the Christmas and New Year celebrations approach.

In a statement issued yesterday, the command’s spokesperson, Henry Okoye, emphasised that the directive, which has been in place for some time, is aimed at ensuring public safety, preventing injuries, and reducing the risk of fires and other accidents associated with fireworks.

“The Imo State Police Command reiterates that the ban on the sale, use, and distribution of pyrotechnics remains fully enforced across the state,” the statement read.

“With the festive season approaching, the command warns that any individual or group caught in possession of or using pyrotechnics—whether during public holidays, festivals, or private events—will be arrested and face severe legal consequences.”

The command will continue to conduct regular patrols and operations to ensure strict compliance with this directive.”

The statement also quoted the Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, urging residents, event organisers, and business owners to adhere to the directive and report any violations to the nearest police station.

“The Commissioner of Police appeals to residents, event organisers, and business owners to cooperate with this directive and report any illegal activities involving pyrotechnics. The command appreciates the ongoing support of the public,” the statement added.

The police assured the public of enhanced security measures during the Yuletide period to protect lives and property, pledging to maintain law and order for a peaceful and secure festive season.
