Gunmen on Wednesday attacked the All Peoples’ Party Secretariat (APP) in new GRA, Port Harcourt, and shot one of the security men at the complex.
The incident is coming barely three weeks after the party secretariat was attacked with explosives suspected to be dynamite by gunmen.
Some political observers in the State have attributed the series of attacks on the APP office to insinuations that the State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and his followers were planning to pitch tents with the party sequel to the failure of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the national and State levels to address the ongoing crisis in the party
They accused Fubara’s rivals of being behind the series of attacks on APP over fear that the party may be coasting the Local Government elections billed for October 5, 2024, among other elections.
Speaking on the developments yesterday, the APP State Chairman, Sunny Wokekoro, described the incidents as bitter politics of bloodshed’ and condemned it completely.
Wokekoro lamented that while the shooting lasted, calls put to the police inspector attached to the party secretariat were not picked up nor returned, alleging a security compromise.
“It is with deep pain in our hearts that we announce that the APP office in Rivers State has been attacked again. You recall that about a few weeks ago after our state party office was unveiled by our national chairman and his team, same day, same night, the party secretariat was bombed,” Wokekoro said.
He said the State Police Commissioner, Tunji Disu, was swift in visiting the scene after the first attack but regretted that no efforts had been made on the outcome of the investigation.
“While we still await the report of that investigation, last night again, almost about the same time, the same place dynamited was also attacked as we got a call between the hours of 11:30 pm to 12 am, that there was a gunshot that affected one of our security men,” Wokekoro said.
He said the victim is receiving treatment in a hospital in the state.
The APP State chairman, however, added that the attacks will prevent the party from delivering Rivers people in the next electoral dispensation.
Our correspondent gathered that the victim was receiving treatment in the hospital.
