Seven inmates regain freedom as NGO offsets fines in Oyo, Kwara

A ray of hope recently shone across correctional facilities in Kwara and Oyo states as Anchor Heritage Initiative, a non-governmental organisation dedicated to the welfare and rehabilitation of inmates, paid the fines of seven incarcerated persons who had been unable to secure their release due to financial constraints.

The affected inmates, convicted by different courts and given the option of paying a fine instead of incarceration, had languished in custody for months, and in some cases, years, because they could not afford the stipulated sums. Their freedom came after Anchor Heritage stepped in to offset the payments.

Visibly elated, several of the released inmates expressed joy and gratitude, describing the gesture as “a second chance at life.”

Speaking on the initiative, the Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of Anchor Heritage, Mrs Ololade Oladipupo, said the decision to intervene was in line with the organisation’s mission to restore dignity and hope to inmates across Nigeria.

“Many of these individuals are not hardened criminals. They are men who found themselves behind bars simply because they could not raise relatively small fines. We believe justice should not be determined by the depth of one’s pocket, and this is why we are committed to helping more inmates regain their freedom and reintegrate into society,” she said.

Oladipupo further revealed that Anchor Heritage plans to extend the initiative to other states, paying fines for more inmates in similar circumstances. According to her, the long-term goal is not only to secure freedom but also to support rehabilitation and reintegration through education, skills acquisition, and empowerment.

The organisation also received commendation from the officer in charge of Omu Aran Custodial Centre in Kwara, who praised Anchor Heritage’s intervention as timely and impactful.

Established eight years ago, Anchor Heritage continues to work across key pillars, including legal aid, empowerment, education, technology, welfare, and aftercare for inmates.
