Students attack Ogun police station, demand release of colleagues

Ogun State Police Command

Some students of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, at the weekend, stormed the Oru-Ijebu Police Division, demanding the release of their colleagues allegedly detained at the Division’s custody.

The students, who besieged the police station in their large numbers, threatened to attack the station if their allegedly detained colleagues were not released immediately from the custody.

The Spokesperson for the Command, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, in a statement, said that in a swift response, the police on duty explained to the aggrieved students that none of their members were detained at the station.

He said that on hearing this, the students became agitated and forcefully opened the gate, throwing stones and bottles at the officers, and threatening to destroy property within the station if they failed to produce their colleagues.

Babaseyi explained that the personnel had to call for reinforcement as they could not contain the angry students, using teargas to disperse them.

He said: “On Saturday, March 28, 2026, a group of students mobilised to Oru-Ijebu Police Division, claiming some of their colleagues were detained. The Divisional Police Officer, Oru Ijebu Division, confirmed that no student was in the Division’s custody.

“The students became agitated, breached the station gate, threw stones and bottles, and threatened to attack the police personnel and destroy property. Reinforcements were called and teargas was used to disperse the crowd. Normalcy has since been restored.”

The Command, therefore, urged members of the public, especially the students, to address their grievances through lawful and peaceful channels, reaffirming its commitment to professionalism and public safety.
