Tiv leaders warn of fresh threats, commend security efforts in Taraba

Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas

The President General of the Tiv Cultural and Social Association (TCSA), James Chihi Bakah, alongside the Forum of Tiv Political Appointees, has raised concerns over emerging security threats targeting Tiv communities in Southern Taraba.

Addressing journalists on Thursday in Jalingo, the group alleged that attackers may be regrouping, with plans to target communities such as Ananum, Tor-Damisa, Peva, and Kofai Amadu in Donga and Takum local government areas.

Despite the concerns, the Tiv leaders commended recent security deployments across affected communities, noting that the intervention has begun to restore calm in previously volatile areas.

Bakah said the Tiv people welcomed the efforts of the Taraba State Government under Governor Agbu Kefas, adding that the presence of security personnel has significantly improved the situation on the ground.

According to him, the deployment has deterred further attacks and renewed confidence among residents who had lived in fear for months. “Some areas that were previously tense are now experiencing relative calm,” he said.

The group also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as well as the Nigerian Army and Nigerian Air Force, for their swift response to reported threats, noting that the intervention helped prevent a wider crisis.

Bakah warned that without the timely action of the state government and security agencies, the situation could have escalated into violence similar to past incidents in Benue State and Kwara State.

While acknowledging the progress made, the Tiv leaders called for sustained and possibly increased security presence in communities such as New Gboko, Demevaa, Adu, and Gbundu to prevent a relapse into violence.

They also expressed appreciation to Governor Kefas for providing relief materials to displaced persons in Donga, Abako, and Chanchanji, describing the gesture as a demonstration of responsive leadership.

Reiterating their concerns over fresh threats, the leaders urged authorities to maintain ongoing security operations to prevent further attacks, particularly as the farming season approaches.

They also stressed the need for cooperation between residents and security agencies, urging locals to provide timely intelligence to support efforts aimed at sustaining peace.

The Tiv leaders reaffirmed their commitment to peace and development and pledged continued support for the state government, while calling for collective efforts to ensure lasting stability across Taraba State.
