Traffic chaos hits Lagos Island as Tinubu attends ECOWAS golden jubilee

Major parts of Lagos Island yesterday experienced traffic blockages due to President Bola Tinubu’s attendance at the 50th-anniversary celebration of ECOWAS, leaving many commuters stranded.

The president arrived in Lagos on Tuesday evening to participate in high-level events commemorating the regional bloc’s golden jubilee. His visit prompted heightened security measures, particularly in Ikoyi, Falomo, Victoria Island, and surrounding areas.

Security operatives closed several roads, resulting in heavy traffic congestion that left motorists and commuters frustrated. Many residents expressed their anger, criticising the government for poor planning and for neglecting the transportation needs of Lagos residents.

In anticipation of traffic disruptions, the Lagos State government had previously announced diversions and advised motorists to take alternative routes. However, these measures appeared to have minimal impact, as road users continued to face severe gridlock.

Tinubu, accompanied by former Head of State General Yakubu Gowon (rtd), arrived at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) yesterday to participate in the event.

At the historic NIIA Conference Chamber, where the ECOWAS founding treaty was signed in 1975, the president signed the ECOWAS 50th Anniversary Card.

The presidency had earlier announced that Tinubu would not rush back to Abuja, as he is scheduled to commission and launch several projects, both in person and virtually, during his time in Lagos.

The president is expected to return to Abuja after Eid el-Kabir, which falls on June 6.
