Two brothers killed as truck crashes into motorcycle in Akure

Accident scene

Two middle-aged brothers were yesterday crushed to death when an unregistered tipper truck collided with the motorcycle they were riding along Fiwasaye Road in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

The fatal accident occurred in front of the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) on the busy Fiwasaye Road, as angry residents accused VIO operatives of causing the crash.

The accident involved an unregistered tipper truck, a Nissan vehicle with registration number Ondo WWW-327 TA, and an unregistered Mate 90 motorcycle.

The victims, identified as LawalAdegoke and his brother, were said to be popular fruit sellers operating around the Iyeoma axis in the Alagbaka area.

Residents alleged that VIO officials had stopped vehicles to inspect documents, resulting in heavy traffic congestion before the crash occurred.
The two brothers were rushed to the Federal University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Akure (FUTATH), where they were confirmed dead on arrival by medical personnel.

An eyewitness, who identified himself simply as Kunle, said the tipper rammed into several vehicles and motorcycles trapped in traffic. “I had to run for my life. My vehicle was also badly damaged in the process,” he said.

The Nigeria Police Force later intervened to prevent angry youths from attacking the VIO office and its operatives. After calm was restored, officers from the Ijapo Police Division evacuated the bodies to a morgue.

The Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP AbayomiJimoh, confirmed the incident, saying police operatives responded promptly to the scene for documentation and investigation.

He said some aggrieved youths attempted to attack the VIO officials present at the scene, but police officers prevented further escalation and maintained order.

Jimoh expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and urged motorists to obey traffic regulations and maintain safe speed limits to avoid preventable accidents. He added that investigation into the incident is ongoing.
