More than two years after being razed by an irate mob, the Akaeze Police Station in Ivo Local Council of Ebonyi State remains in a makeshift condition, raising concerns about its functionality and security.

The Guardian learnt that the police station was set ablaze in January 2022 by youths protesting the alleged torture and death of a local resident, Nnaogo Anyim, at the hands of the Ebubeagu Security Network.

The incident sparked outrage after a viral video showed operatives using axes and other dangerous weapons on Anyim, who later died in hospital. The ensuing protest resulted in loss of lives, destruction of properties, and the burning of the Akaeze Police Station and Magistrate Court, which shared the same premises.

While the court has since been relocated, the police station remains in a dilapidated makeshift state.

A visit to the site revealed an overgrown compound lacking basic amenities such as fencing, power supply, or adequate facilities for law enforcement activities. Officers are forced to use makeshift furniture made from sandbags, broken blocks, and wood, while a weather-beaten signpost and torn Nigerian and police flags stand as symbols of neglect.

Community leaders have expressed dismay over the station’s condition. “How can they keep arms here when everywhere is open? They can’t even detain a suspect without risking an attack from their gang members,” lamented Jerry Nwenyi, a local leader. “The officers are either sleeping or unable to assist residents effectively due to the lack of resources.”

Ikechi Okwun, another community member, called for government intervention. “Some prominent individuals have promised to renovate the facility but have done nothing. The government should step in. Rebuilding the station will help sustain the peace that has returned to the community,” he said.
