Umahi varsity expels three students, sanctions others over misconduct

Vice Chancellor of David Umahi Federal University Health Sciences (DUFUHS), Uburu Ebonyi State, Prof Jesse Uneke, said the institution sanctioned 29 students last year, depending on the magnitude of their offences.

Three students were expelled due to examination misconduct and stealing.

Uneke disclosed this at the 5th Matriculation/Open Day for the 2025/2026 session during which 1,044 students were admitted.

He called on the host community, especially parents, to take advantage of the institution’s community free extra mural programme by encouraging their children to participate, noting the institution’s disciplinary measures as very impressive.

He said: “Ten students received one year suspension for smoking of illicit drugs, obscene and libellous publication, cyber bullying and stealing.

“Fourteen students received between one month and one semester suspension for bullying, assault and stealing. One student was withdrawn as a result of poor academic performance, and one student received a warning letter for misdemeanour,” he stated.

According to him, the university has commenced a free Extramural Programme for the host community and environs to prepare students for WAEC/NECO and JAMB examinations.

He further disclosed that courses taught are English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. He added that the programmes are absolutely free of charge and are part of the community development initiative.

To facilitate the programme, Uneke stated that tables and chairs, solar power systems, fans and teaching materials had been provided by DUFUHS, adding that lecturers are from the university.

The VC had earlier expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for the boost his administration brought to the education sector through the Renewed Hope programme.

He stated that the university has benefited tremendously from the educational reform of the Federal Government, adding that through the Federal Government, enormous infrastructural development had taken place in the institution through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).

According to the VC, just as the university does not spare any student that violates its regulations, it also does not spare any lecturer that violates the university’s conditions of service, even as he called on the students to take their studies seriously.
