Why Aisha Achimugu may stay longer in custody – EFCC

Following reports that it was directed to release businesswoman Aisha Achimugu, within 24 hours, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has clarified that it was only directed by Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja to facilitate the release of Achimugu on the commission’s bail conditions.

This order was made on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, after the court was informed that Achimugu’s previous bail to her lawyer was revoked by the commission and fresh conditions were issued.

According to EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale, during the proceeding, an attempt by her counsel, Kehinde Oguwumiju, SAN, to seek the variation of the terms of the bail was opposed by the commission’s counsel, E.E. Iheanacho, SAN, and rejected by the court, following which the same was withdrawn.

Achimugu is being investigated by the Commission for alleged conspiracy, money laundering, obtaining under false pretences, corruption, and possession of properties suspected to have been acquired through unlawful means.

She was arrested on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, and brought before the court on Wednesday.

Justice Ekwo, in a short ruling, said the commission should expedite actions to ensure the processing of all bail conditions and directed all parties to report on compliance with the directive on May 2, 2025.
