Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has donated N100 million to support 88 wounded soldiers and families of fallen heroes in the Northeast.
The funds were handed over to the Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai, Maj-Gen. Abdulsalam Abubakar, during a Sallah luncheon organised by the Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, at the Maimalari Cantonment in Maiduguri.
Zulum expressed his gratitude to the fallen heroes who sacrificed their lives to protect lives, property, and the territorial integrity of the country. He also commended the Federal Government for its forest guards initiative and called for stronger collaboration among the Nigerian Armed Forces, police, and other security agencies to decisively tackle terrorists and their informants, whom he described as deadlier than the insurgents.
The governor announced that each wounded soldier would receive N500,000, while N56 million would be distributed to the families of fallen heroes to cover daily stipends and other forms of support.
Providing updates on the fight against terrorism, Maj-Gen. Abubakar revealed that over 100 terrorists, including at least 12 commanders of Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province, were neutralised last week during operations in Marte, Izge, and Bitta communities in Borno State.
Also, the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar, disclosed that intelligence surveillance in the Sambisa Forest and Lake Chad region has been intensified with the procurement of Super Tucano aircraft. He added that the new aerial platforms have enabled night operations to target terrorists’ hideouts in the forest effectively.
