Global group, IMUNN, holds youth conference in Lagos

A group, International Model United Nations, Nigeria [IMUNN], will hold its conference from August 4th through 9th, 2015 at Centre for Management Development, Shangisha, Lagos.

According to a statement, the theme for this year’s summit, “Post 2015 Global Agenda: Consolidating on the MDGs through the SDGs”, was designed to sharpen awareness of youths to drive solutions to problems in their communities.

The statement described IMUNN as a forum that helps inspire young people to be aware of topical issues and be a part of providing solutions to the myriads of local, national, regional and global challenges. “It’s also a simulation of the United Nations, its organs and systems, with the aim of educating participants about civic responsibilities, socio-economic policy formulation, globalizatio and multilateralism. It encourages unification of persons/ideas, team play, qualitative research, critical thinking, analytical writing, lobbying and negotiation, as well as public speaking and presentation skills.

“The platform offers young people great opportunities to take responsibilities for global issues of the day. It provides a stage for those who want to understand world political dynamics; and presents a platform for capacity building which is a major and vital part of leadership.”

At the Model United Nations conference, participants will act as diplomats [Representatives of UN member states] and take part in a simulated session of the United Nations General Assembly. Participants will be assigned as Representatives of countries different from their countries of origin, and will speak for such countries at both Committee and General Assembly on specified topics, where they will research, debate, deliberate, consult and then profer workable solutions to world problems.

It was learnt that at the 2015 conference, about 200 delegates from across Africa and beyond will gather to discuss, debate and come up with resolutions to several topical issues.

“There will also be opening and closing plenary sessions, diplomatic lectures, cultural night and closing dinner/awards ceremony.”

The statement listed the oraganising committees as World Health Organisation, United Nations Educational and Scientific Organisation, Sociocultural and Humanitarian Organisation and Security Council, among others.
