‘LP vindicated by Nwanyanwu’s exit’
THE National Chairman, Caretaker Committee of the Labour Party (LP), Alhaji Salisu Mohammed, has said the resignation of the party’s erstwhile chairman, Mr. Dan Nwanyanwu, did not come as a surprise, describing it as a vindication and a blessing to the party.
He also said the catastrophe that led to the aborted delegates’ conference of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the subsequent inconclusive election would be looked into.
Mohammed, who made this known to the media yesterday in Abuja, said the resignation of Nwanyanwu as the chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT) and member of the party though not anticipated, gives credence to the initial alarm raised that the Akure Convention only produces political jobbers whose interests were to enrich their pockets.
He said: “It is a vindication of what we have all said pertaining how people have defied the directive of (Nigeria Labour Congress) NLC and Trade Union Congress (TUC) after the convention that was held in Akure. We have told the world that they are impostors and do not represent NLC and TUC.”
The party’s caretaker committee chairman, who said the excuses given by Nwanyanwu for leaving the party are not only interesting but a confirmation that something is fundamentally wrong and therefore must be unravelled within the shortest time possible, said: “All the accusations by Nwanyanwu and his resignation is a clear confirmation of all the things we have said that the party is an instrument of moneymaking by people lacking in every sense of decency. Less than six months, between October and now, Nigerians have seen a lot.
“Dan Nwanyanwu had told the world of instances of financial recklessness and mismanagement of funds. We welcome his exit and salute the steps he has taken by distancing himself from the financial recklessness that he saw. Nigerian workers should “expect more from people who don’t have a plan for LP.”
While insisting that the NLC and TUC “have mandated us to reclaim the party”, the national chairman gave the assurance that, we will be irrevocably committed to the reclamation of LP. It is obvious that our victory is not far. There had been a derailment of the party.
Meanwhile, Mohammed said investigations into the botched NLC delegates’ elections have commenced and “Nigerian workers are going to look into the fracas in NLC and bring out solutions”, adding that after the incident, the stakeholders, including LP, workers and other Labour veterans had been meeting to fashion out mechanisms for an end to the misunderstanding.
The LP leader, who described as laughable the suggestion by the National Secretary of the party, Kayode Ajulo, whom he said lacks the moral rectitude to be called a leader as exemplified by his statement, that the party was ready to conduct a free and fair election for the NLC, said: “It really shows how cynical some people will be. Ajulo’s suggestion is sarcastic, we are going to tell Nigerian workers the type of people that claim to be leading their party.”
