Member representing Egor/Ikpoba-Okha Federal Constituency at the National Assembly (NASS), Murphy Osaro Omoruyi, has identified substance abuse as a malady that is fast destroying the youths in the country.
The lawmaker expressed worry over the alarming use of substance by the youth population, which he noted as unacceptable.
He spoke on Tuesday in Benin to commemorate the 2025 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, with the theme “The Evidence is clear: Invest in Prevention.”
He said, “This issue is deeply personal to me. With the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital located in my constituency, I have seen firsthand the pain, damage, and heartbreak caused by drug abuse. I have listened to the cries of families, seen the struggles of young people, and supported those seeking help to rebuild their lives.
These are not just stories; they are real lives, real futures at risk.
“Fighting drug abuse is not just about law enforcement. It is about saving our youth, healing our communities, and giving hope to the hopeless. It’s about building a society where young people can thrive without falling into the traps of addiction and crime.”
He called on parents, leaders, youths, and stakeholders to join in the fight against drug abuse to save the youth who are the future leaders.
“Let’s speak out, take action, and support those affected. Together, we can break the chains of drug abuse and build a brighter, safer future for all,” he said.
The lawmaker said there is an urgent need to tackle drug abuse to end youth restiveness, among other social vices that are fast ravaging the youths.
