The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) yesterday urged Nigerian youth to shun cybercrimes and get-rich-quick mentality. The Benin Zonal Controller of the Corporation, Mrs Patrick Okosun, charged the youths to rather seek for legitimate means of earning a living.

She advised the youth at this year’s Financial Literacy Day held in Asaba, the State capital. Over 200 students of Osadenis mix Secondary, Asaba attended the event where they were educated on the need to be financially prudent and save for the rainy days.

Mrs Okosun said cybercrime, yahoo yahoo and other illegal means of getting money are inimical to progress, adding that they needed to be avoided now, and in the future.

She stated that NDIC collaborates with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to monitor and supervise banks to ensure they operate in a safe and sound manner, protect depositors’ funds, foster monetary stability, and promote effective and efficient payment systems.

Mrs Okosun told the students that NDIC is an agency of the federal government with CBN and the federal ministry of finance holding its share in 60-40 ratio respectively.

At the occasion, the state commissioner for education, Mrs. Rose Ezewu, commended the NDIC for its commitment to promoting financial literacy among secondary school students in Nigeria.

The commissioner, represented by deputy director (Secondary Education), Mrs Justina Ishala, said the initiative aligns with the state government’s efforts to equip the youths with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the complexities of the modern economy. She urged the youths to take advantage of the opportunity to learn from experts and gain valuable insights into effective financial management.

According to her, the theme of the 2025 financial literacy day is particularly apt, as it underscores the importance of prudent financial decision-making, especially among the youth.
