A four-bedroom apartment was completely destroyed by fire on Sunday evening in Ilorin, Kwara State. The Guardian learnt that the entire building, including all property inside, was consumed by the flames.
Eyewitnesses reported that the fire outbreak occurred at about 8:52 p.m. on Ifesowapo Street, Ita-Elepa, Ilorin. The owner of the property, Alhaji AbdulGaniyu Olesin, who is the Head of Department, Social Studies, at the Kwara State College of Education, Oro, expressed his grief over the complete destruction of the building.
He has appealed to the state government for financial assistance to ease the burden caused by the devastating loss. Spokesperson for the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, confirmed the incident in a statement yesterday, attributing the fire to a power surge.
“The Kwara State Fire Service received a distress call on Sunday, February 16, 2025, at about 8:52 p.m. reporting a fire outbreak at Ita-Elepa, Ifesowapo Street, Ilorin,” Adekunle said. “The fire crew responded swiftly and arrived to find a four-bedroom flat engulfed in flames. Despite their exceptional efforts to contain the fire and prevent its spread to nearby buildings, the entire structure was affected due to the late alert. Preliminary investigations identified a power surge as the cause of the fire.”
