Rainstorm wreaks havoc in Ondo, victims seek assistance

A heavy rainstorm, accompanied by strong winds, has caused significaAnt damage in Akure, the Ondo State capital, destroying houses, schools, and church buildings.
The disaster, which occurred on Monday night, affected several communities, including Eleyewo, Ilu-Abo, and Bolorunduro in Akure North Local Council.
The Guardian learnt that residents of the affected areas were seen salvaging soaked belongings, with many in a state of disbelief over the extent of the damage. Properties worth millions of naira were reportedly destroyed, including vehicles, shops, and other valuables.
One of the victims, Lukman Haruna, recounted that the rainstorm, which began at about 6:30 p.m., started as normal rainfall but intensified, accompanied by strong winds that blew off rooftops and destroyed structures.
“The downpour damaged several houses, shops, church buildings, electric poles, and schools,” he said. “The roof of LA Primary School in Ilu Abo was badly affected, while the Redeemed Christian Church of God in Ilu Abo lost its iron roofing and ceiling. The fence of Possibility Church also caved in.”
Haruna added that over 20 houses and churches were destroyed by the rainstorm, including his shop and goods, which were irreparably damaged. He appealed to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and philanthropists for urgent assistance to help the affected victims rebuild their lives.
