Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State, yesterday, appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari, to prioritise the reconstruction and rehabilitation of all federal roads in the state that are in deplorable conditions.

This is as the Edo State government continued the reclamation exercise on the Irhirhi-Obazagbon-Ogheghe axis of the Benin metropolis, which it informed that essential services have been set up on the 1229-hectare portion of land that has been reclaimed from land-grabbers.

Obaseki, who made the appeal during a state-wide broadcast to mark the nation’s 62nd independent anniversary, lamented that despite all entreaties, the Federal Ministry of Works has continued to treat the state as if it is not a part of Nigeria.

He said: “I empathise with Edo people over the impassable state of federal roads that crisscross our state. For commuters going through the Benin-Sapele Road, Benin-Agbor-Asaba Road, Lagos-Benin Road and the Benin-Auchi Road, I know the horrible and frustrating experiences you have been enduring.

“The Benin-Auchi Road, which is the back-bone and main artery connecting all our senatorial zones, and which connects Edo State and other southern states to the northern part of the country, is the most appalling.

“We therefore appeal to President Muhammadu Buhari to make the reconstruction and rehabilitation of these roads a priority for the remaining months of his tenure in office,” he said.

Also, a statement signed by the state Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Mr. Chris Osa Nehikhare, said the government dislodged land-grabbers in the Irhirhi-Obazagbon-Ogheghe area on Thursday, and has since taken possession of the area for the development of a new town.

According to him, the exercise has been without casualty, but a total of 11 persons were arrested for loitering in the area.
