Scholars gather at Ife summer institute over innovation, research


Professor Patricia Kameri-Mbote, one of Kenya’s most decorated legal scholars, is one of the many scholars across the globe present at the on-going Ife Summer Institute, a programme of the Institute of Advanced Studies, Ile-Ife, taking place at the iconic Oduduwa Hall of the institution.

According to the Convener of the Institute, Prof. Jacob Kehinde Olupona, FNAL, NNOM, of the Harvard University, U.S., Prof. Kameri-Mbote of the University of Nairobi who has just been awarded a higher Doctorate (Doctor of Laws) by thesis, recently became the first woman, and the sixth individual in the history of the University of Nairobi, to receive a Higher Doctorate Degree.

The theme for this year’s Summer Institute is “Knowledge Society: Scholarship, Teaching and Service.” The Summer Institute will end on August 3, 2019, with participants drawn from the U.S., Zambia, Kenya, South Africa and several other institutions from Nigeria. The Summer Institute, which was inaugurated in 2017, holds yearly at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria.

This is the third in the series. The goal of the inter-disciplinary residential summer programme is to facilitate and foster innovative research among pre-doctoral and postdoc scholars in the academy, particularly those in the humanities and social sciences by exposing them to relevant theory, method and pedagogies. The Institute’s summer programme is an international platform anchored by a team of senior scholars.The Vice Chancellor, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Prof. Eyitope Ogunbodede, is the chief host.
