Varsity issues warning on decency, moral standards at matriculation
The Senate of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike (MOUAU), Abia State, has announced plans to introduce stringent sanctions for students involved in anti-social behaviours, particularly indecent dressing.
The Vice Chancellor (VC) of the university, Professor Maduebibisi Ofo Iwe, disclosed the Senate’s decision while addressing 4,781 newly admitted students, including 4,600 undergraduates, 150 in Continuing Education, and 31 postgraduates, during their matriculation ceremony.
Iwe expressed concern over the rising prevalence of behaviours that violate the university’s moral code, stressing that MOUAU is a community committed to decency and moral decorum. He disclosed that the university strives to shape individuals who are exemplary in both character and learning.
The VC reaffirmed the university’s zero tolerance for indecent dressing, cult activities, and examination malpractice, stating that MOUAU is neither a society for rascals nor a haven for prostitution. He urged both male and female students to uphold modesty and decency in their attire.
Also, Iwe encouraged the new students to apply for the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), a recent initiative by the Federal Government, to help cover their academic expenses. He informed students and their sponsors that fresh students will become eligible for the loan after their first year.
