The summit will be convened by the Nigeria National Plastic Action Partnership (NPAP Nigeria), hosted by the Policy Innovation Centre, with the Government of Nigeria, through the Federal Ministry of Environment, and with strategic support from the Global Plastic Action Partnership (GPAP), hosted by the World Economic Forum.
Held under the theme “Innovation, Inclusion and Investment for a Circular Plastics Economy in Africa,” the Summit will convene government leaders, industry stakeholders, development partners, financiers, researchers, youth and informal sector actors to advance practical solutions for a circular plastics economy across Africa.
According to Dr, Osasuyi Dirisu, Executive Director, Policy Innovation Centre, which hosts the NPAP Nigeria, the objectives of the Summit are anchored around three priorities: advancing circularity as an economic and industrial opportunity; strengthening policy implementation and financing mechanisms; and ensuring an inclusive and just transition that integrates informal sector actors into formal circular systems.
“The Summit will also serve as a regional platform for African NPAPs and government focal points to strengthen collaboration, share implementation progress, and align investment priorities” She added
Plastic remains a critical material in modern economies, yet across Africa an estimated 18 million tonnes of plastic waste is generated annually, much of which is lost due to weak collection systems, limited recycling infrastructure, and fragmented policy implementation. Nigeria, as Africa’s largest economy, is positioned to play a leading role in advancing a more circular and inclusive plastics value chain.
Clemence Schmid, Global Plastic Action Partnership Director, World Economic Forum, noted that The National Plastic Summit comes at a pivotal moment as countries increasingly focus on turning commitments into action.
“Nigeria has demonstrated strong leadership in advancing circular economy solutions and building the partnerships needed to tackle plastic pollution at scale. Through NPAP Nigeria, stakeholders are showing how country-led partnerships can connect policy, investment and innovation to drive meaningful progress. We are proud to support Nigeria in advancing an inclusive and circular plastics economy” he added
The National Plastic Summit is therefore positioned as an action-oriented convening that connects policy, investment, and innovation to accelerate system-wide change.

In her remarks, Bahijjatu Abubakar, Director, Department of Pollution Control and Environmental Health, Federal Ministry of Environment, urged stakeholders to come forward with innovative solutions and plastic action plans that will ensure Nigeria’s circular economy becomes a significant contributor to national GDP.
The Summit will strengthen coordination across sectors and support the development of scalable solutions that drive investment, innovation, and inclusion in the circular plastics economy.
