‘UI lecturers among Africa’s top 100 scientists’
Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, Prof. Ayodeji Omole, yesterday, said that the Nigerian university system is under siege and currently “working in the shadows of death.”
Omole maintained that the university system had been captured and held hostage by many government policies, especially since the advent of the so-called ‘civil rule’.
The professor made these assertions while delivering the 561st inaugural lecture of the University of Ibadan (UI), entitled “Working in the shadows of death.”
Omole, who was ASUU chairman, said that unless something urgent is done to stop the Federal Government’s attacks on Nigeria’s educational system, the system will die faster than anticipated.
He took a swipe at various civilian administrations, which he said, foisted anti-intellectual policies on the education system in the country.
Meanwhile, four distinguished Nigerian scientists from UI have earned recognition on Africa’s prestigious list of the top 100 scientists, highlighting Nigeria’s significant contributions to global research and innovation.
The scientists include Prof. Oye Gureje, Prof. Mayowa Owolabi Dr Olayinka Stephen Ilesanmi and Prof. Shafiu Mohammed.
Their inclusion in the top-ranking list underscores Nigeria’s growing influence in various scientific fields, including medicine, engineering, and environmental studies.
