Nigerians commend UN for ensuring world peace

A cross section of Nigerians have commended the United Nations for ensuring world peace as it marks its Day on Oct. 24.

A retired professor of history, Mrs Bolanle Awe, told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan that the world would have been chaotic without the United Nations and its activities.

The UN was established in 1945 under ‘The United Nations Charter’; and the General Assembly running organ subsequently came into being.
“The General Assembly occupies a central position as the Chief deliberative, policy making and representative organ of the UN.

It comprises all 193 members of the UN; providing a unique forum for multilateral discussion of the full spectrum of international issues by the Charter.
“It also plays a significant role in the process of standard –setting and the codification of international law; the Assembly meets from September to December each year.

It is empowered to make recommendations to States on international issues and has initiated political, economic, humanitarian, social and legal actions which have affected millions of people all over the world,’’ she said.

Mr Sunday Adeyemi, a Director of nursing at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, said the United Nations deserved commendation in the enormous task before it.
Adeyemi said United Nations had been helpful in the area of health, social security and stability for members and non-member countries in the world.

Mr Amos Agbaakin, a teacher at Oluyole High School, said “since we mark, Teachers Day, Youth Day, the UN deserved to mark its day too”, he said.

There is also the programme tagged: ‘Turn the world blue’, which the UN uses to celebrate the day world-wide.
Documents, buildings, statues, bridges and other landmarks across the world are lit up in colour blue to help unite the world. (NAN)
