Nigerians spent N1.3tr on PMS in June as Dangote, marketers deepen competition

Nigerians spent an estimated N1.3 trillion on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) in June 2025, as fresh competition among marketers, including the Dangote refinery, intensified efforts to gain a larger share of the downstream market.

PMS sold for between N885 and N925 per litre during the month, with an average pump price of N905 per litre. With a total of 1.44 billion litres of the product distributed nationwide, consumer spending on petrol soared to record levels.

An analysis of the volume of petrol trucked out shows that N411.9 billion worth came directly from refineries, while the remaining N891.9 billion originated from depots, showing the critical role played by downstream infrastructure in nationwide supply.

The figures are contained in a new report released by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) and presented to the Federation Accounts Allocation Committee (FAAC).

The data reveals that offtake from local refineries per day stands at about 15 million litres per day, while about 35 million litres are supplied from across depots.

In June alone, 455.2 million litres of PMS were trucked out from refineries, while depots accounted for 985.6 million litres, representing an 18.55 per cent increase from the 1.22 billion litres recorded in May. The average daily distribution was 48 million litres in June, from 54 million litres, with the number of trucks rising from about 37,000 in May and 32,000 in June.

The development comes amid emerging competition from the Dangote Refinery, which is seeking to reshape Nigeria’s fuel supply chain.

Meanwhile, Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), commonly known as diesel, witnessed 424 million litres distributed in June and 552 million in May. In June, refineries supplied 54 million litres while depots supplied 370 million litres.

Daily truckoutswere 14 million litres in June and 17 million litres in May.

Aviation Turbine Kerosene (ATK) volume was 54 million litres in May and 67 million litres in June.
