Nigerians still in darkness, DisCos share 450MW as TCN says grid restored

Only about 450 megawatts of the country’s average 4,000MW grid connected electricity is being shared by the eleven electricity distribution companies despite the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) insisted that the electricity supply has been fully restored after the collapse of the grid.

Information available on the government’s website that monitors grid performance showed that Abuja, Ibadan, Ikeja, Eko Benin and Enugu Discos have been able to offtake 450 megawatts of electricity while Kaduna , Jos, Port-Harcourt, Yola and Kano DisCos have zero supply at about 3pm today.

But in a statement by TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, the agency which manages the grid described the power outage as a temporary incident which occurred due to an explosion of a bus section in a current transformer at the 330kV Jebba Transmission Substation.

TCN confirmed that the protection system was promptly activated, isolating the faulty equipment by opening the busbars.

TCN noted that the quick response contained the explosion, preventing the spread of fire and further damage to other equipment.

“Our engineers swiftly carried out switchings and isolated the affected transformer. They also reconfigured the busbar arrangement to restore power supply to the station and other parts of the grid,” the statement read.

TCN assured the public that the grid is stable, and electricity supply has been restored to all affected areas.

The company reiterated its commitment to maintaining efficient grid operations and minimizing disruptions.
