NIMR DG, others charge EkoUNIMED inducted doctors on humility

Director general of the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR), Prof. John Oladapo Obafunwa, has urged newly inducted medical doctors of Eko University of Medicine and Health Sciences (EkoUNIMED) to remain focused, humble, and dedicated to their calling despite economic challenges and societal distractions.

Obafunwa, who gave the charge during the first induction and oath-taking ceremony of the university, urged the inductees to avoid unhealthy comparisons with colleagues in other professions who may appear to be faring better financially.

He reminded the young doctors of the transient nature of life and the need for kindness and compassion in their practice. Obafunwa, who also cautioned against unethical practices and indifference in medical service delivery, said: “I have seen doctors fail to attend to their colleagues and others in need. I’ve seen doctors collect consultation fees and not write a single thing on paper. No matter how privileged you are, try to be humble,” he said.

He, therefore, called on medical leaders to ensure that emergency departments remain functional during strikes, noting that “the next patient could be your sister, brother, or colleague.”

In his address, the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. G.O.G. Awosanya, congratulated the new doctors and their parents, commending them for their commitment and perseverance.

Also, Deputy Registrar of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), Nnaemeka Nwakanma, praised the university for its progress and accreditation milestones. He reminded the new doctors that their duty transcends politics or social divisions.

Founder and Proprietor of EkoUNIMED, Dr Hammed Ayodele Ibrahim, lauded the institution’s achievements and urged Nigerians to emulate its model of integrity and investment in education. Ibrahim emphasised that EkoUNIMED remains a top-class institution recognised globally for its academic standard and commitment to excellence.
