Afro-house artist Niniola Apata shares a heartfelt tribute to her late husband, Michael Ndika. The singer, who had been married to Michael Ndika for 13 years, recently announced the loss through a series of emotional social media posts. Ndika was 44.
Speaking on the impact her husband had on her life and career, the singer said, “Michael did everything for me. He was breathing for me. He loved me so much. I learnt so much from him. When he met me, he said, ‘I will make you a superstar.’ Michael was my engine. He was the first person I saw in the morning and the last person at night.”
Niniola disclosed that her husband was her greatest pillar of support, noting that he often persuaded her to continue with her music career whenever she considered stepping away.
“But Michael met me raw, and he said, ‘I’ll make you a superstar.’ And he did. I was just the face and the voice, but Michael was the engine,” the singer reflected.
Ndika was a prominent figure in the Nigerian music industry, best known as the Chief Executive Officer of NaijaReview, a multimedia platform that played a vital role in promoting Afro-house and contemporary African music. Colleagues and industry insiders have described him as a strategic thinker who helped define the early days of digital music promotion and artist development in Nigeria. Before his music career, he built a solid professional background as a systems engineer and IT specialist, which informed his methodical approach to management.
The couple’s professional partnership began in 2013 following Niniola’s time on Project Fame West Africa. Ndika became her manager shortly after, guiding her through the release of her debut single and remaining a constant presence throughout her rise to stardom.
The news of Ndika’s passing has drawn an outpouring of condolences from fans and fellow artists alike. Despite the shock surrounding the revelation of their long-term marriage, the industry continues to honour Ndika’s legacy as a man who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to champion the music he loved.
