THE Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has raised alarm over a sharp increase in fraudulent migration schemes and irregular cross border syndicates operating across the Nigeria.

The agency warns that criminal networks are increasingly targeting vulnerable citizens, particularly young women and girls with deceptive offers of overseas employment, education and better livelihoods.

In a statement made public by It’s national spokesman, Akinsola Akinlabi, the Comptroller-General of the service, Kemi Nandap revealed that these illicit operations frequently lead to forced labour, human trafficking, and severe forms of exploitation.

The immigration authorities emphasised that leaving Nigeria without a valid passport, visa, and requisite documentation is not only illegal but fraught with severe dangers.

“The Service warns that criminal networks often target vulnerable individuals, particularly young women and girls, through deceptive offers of employment, education, and opportunities for a better life abroad.

“No genuine travel process bypasses official immigration procedures or authorised border posts,” Nandap said.

The NIS urged citizens to exercise extreme caution when presented with unsolicited sponsorships, travel fares, or assistance to go abroad from unverified individuals.

To curb the trend, the agency advised the public to verify the authenticity of all recruitment offers through official government channels and to avoid engaging middlemen who facilitate irregular migration.

The CG said further implored parents, guardians, and community leaders to remain vigilant and educate the youth on the inherent dangers of human trafficking.

She urged the public to report suspicious border movements or recruitment agents to its formations nationwide or through its round the clock contact numbers. She reiterated the NIS’ commitment to border security and citizen protection.
