NIS seeks stronger laws for tech-driven border security

Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Kemi Nandap

Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Kemi Nandap, has said the agency is streamlining initiatives, rule of law and extant statutory provisions in the exercise of its duties to protect the territorial integrity of the country’s borders and boost efficient service delivery to Nigerians and non-Nigerians alike.

She made the disclosure at the inaugural NIS Law Week, themed ‘Leveraging Technology and Strengthening Legal Framework for a Secure and Efficient Immigration Service’, yesterday in Abuja.

The CG said the NIS had made substantial investments in guarding Nigeria’s borders and is therefore taking the necessary steps to protect these investments and improve them for efficient delivery and overall border security.

Her words: “Giant strides made by the Service in recent times include improved and enhanced technology in the Migration Information and Data Analysis System (MIDAS), the deployment of digital surveillance tools at borders, the e- Gates deployed at our international airports, Advanced Passenger Information (API) and Passenger Name Record (PNR).

“There is no doubt that so many resources have been invested to protect the territorial integrity of the Nigerian borders. It is imperative that such giant strides made are in tandem with statutory provisions of the law, in compliance with the rule of law, and all operations carried out are governed by standard guidelines and legal framework in line with best global practice.”

Nandap called for the strengthening of legal and operational frameworks to support the organisation’s increasing deployment of technology to secure Nigeria’s borders and improve service delivery.

Represented by the Deputy Comptroller General (DCG) on Human Resource Management, Afolayan Ayeni, the CG explained that the programme marked a significant milestone in institutional development.

She described the theme as timely, noting that it reflects the realities of modern border management.

In her welcome remarks, NIS Director of Legal Service, Oluwatoyin Yusuf, stressed that immigration operations must continuously adapt to technological advancements and emerging global challenges.
