NMCO partners DSS for cybersecurity training to bolster online operations
The Nigeria Mining Cadastre Office (NMCO) has partnered with the Department of State Services (DSS) to train its staff in cybersecurity. The training, which focused on safeguarding personal and organisational systems against cyber threats, reflects NMCO’s proactive approach to fostering a secure digital environment. The initiative supports its mission to boost investment in Nigeria’s mineral sector through transparent and efficient online processes.
Speaking at the training session, NMCO Director-General Obadiah Simon Nkom urged staff to adhere to the cybersecurity guidelines outlined during the DSS-led programme. He highlighted the significance of protecting both personal and institutional assets, especially following the launch of NMCO’s electronic Mining Cadastre Plus (eMC+) system in November 2022.
Nkom said: “I believe you all know that our eMC+ has been online since it was launched in November 2022, and we have received many online applications. As such, we need to be very careful and be able to identify such tricks as we are being taught today.
“Everybody is prone to attack, and this training is part of our strategy in reforming the office and developing security alertness. We must therefore be committed to ensuring zero tolerance for cybercrimes.”
The training included a Declaration of Oath of Secrecy and Oath of Allegiance undertaken by NMCO staff, underscoring their dedication to ethical service delivery, loyalty, and accountability.
In a statement, the agency’s Head of Press, FolasadeFatoke, said the oaths emphasised the importance of loyalty, honesty, hard work, accountability, and integrity.
Nkom further explained: “You’re all expected to protect the government’s documents, and this is why we are taking you through this training.”
The training covered essential cybersecurity topics, including protection against malware, phishing, identity theft, and safeguarding sensitive documents. Interactive sessions equipped participants with skills to effectively recognise and address potential cyber threats.
