Southwest leader of New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP), Alhaji Adebisi Olopoeyan, yesterday, said the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and other security agencies at the national level, should wade into the investigation of those behind the destruction of campaign billboards belonging to opposition political parties and candidates in Oyo State.

The NNPP leader said this is necessary as it is glaring that the situation has gone beyond what the Oyo State Police Command could handle due to some certain factors.

Olopoeyan in a statement alleged that the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidates for the 2023 elections in the state are the ones  instigating their loyalists to damage opposition parties’ campaign billboards.

Olopoeyan, who made the statement in reaction to the order given to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) by the Oyo State Commissioner of Police,  to commence full investigations into the alleged destruction of party billboards in some parts of the state, insisted that though the directive was noble and well intended “I doubt if any meaningful result could be achieved by the order because of the forces behind the atrocities, who are agents of the ruling PDP.”

According to him, “I give kudos to the Oyo state Police command for continuous effort in making sure residents’ lives and property were protected but it is glaring that the hands of the police in Oyo are tied concerning any attempt to arrest the hoodlums that are going around the state to destroy political campaigns billboards because they are getting protection from the state government.

“The continuous attack on opposition parties by hoodlums working for the ruling party is worrisome while the Police and other security personnel in the state are finding it difficult to do their work assiduously because powers that be are the brain behind the daily attacks.”

He added that  police and all other security personnel in Oyo State cannot feign ignorance that those destroying campaign billboards are working for a particular governorship candidate and his party to undermine the campaigns of other candidates in the coming gubernatorial election.

“ It is now every day that a well known hoodlum and his boys are going out to destroy opposition campaign billboards, no political party or candidate billboard is left out, in as much, there is no PDP logo on the billboard, the hoodlums tear it out totally. Be it APC, NNPP, Accord, or SDP, you can go back to town now and even check Ibarapa, Oyo, and other areas, it is only billboards of one candidate that is left undamaged.

“Not only destroying billboards, but they are also determined to kill opposition loyalists and members. It is now a very risky thing to put on any vest, T-Shirt and cap with the inscription of any opposition party logo, picture of candidate and walk in any part of Oyo without being attacked or harassed by these known thugs.”

Olopoeyan warned that if a lasting solution is not provided by the Police through a standing order from Abuja “nobody would be surprised if these thugs begin to visit opposition homes to attack them.

” We have made several complaints but the police are not allowed to do their work, the Oyo State police knows what to do when they get any distress calls, they have the information of the group and know their whereabouts but they are handicap somehow,” he said.
