The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), has recorded zero fatal road traffic crashes on the Kugbo outbound Abuja-Nasarawa corridor over a 100-day period, following the restriction of articulated vehicles during peak hours.
Under the initiative, articulated vehicles are barred from plying the busy route between 3:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. daily. The operation is backed by Section 223 of the National Road Traffic Regulations (2022) and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Traffic Regulations.
The milestone is attributed to “Operation Safe Kugbo,” a preventive intervention launched on March 18, 2026, by the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, to address recurring fatal accidents involving heavy-duty trucks and commuter vehicles.
In a statement detailing the impact of the operation, the FRSC Deputy Corps Commander and Corps Public Education Officer, Osondu Ohaeri, disclosed that over 7,000 articulated vehicles were successfully restricted during the designated hours within the first 100 days.
Ohaeri said: “Since the commencement of Operation Safe Kugbo on 18th March 2026, not a single fatal road traffic crash has been recorded on the affected corridor. Not one.
“Rather than allowing articulated trucks to compete for limited road space with thousands of commuters rushing home, FRSC personnel enforce temporary movement restrictions until traffic eases. This pin-down operation is driven by mutual understanding between the Corps and fleet operators.”
He explained that the intervention was built on the strategy of removing the greatest source of danger during periods when traffic density and associated risks are at their highest.
Despite the high level of compliance and resulting safety record, Ohaeri noted that the operation was sustained by a relatively small team from the Nyanya Unit Command. The deployment consisted of just six officers, 22 marshals, two patrol vehicles, and four motorcycles operating on a consistent shift basis.
According to him, the intervention reflects a broader shift in the philosophy of modern road safety administration, moving away from post-crash responses towards strict preventive measures.
He added, “Operation Safe Kugbo is a practical demonstration that the most successful road safety strategy is not measured by the number of offenders prosecuted or patrols conducted. It is measured by empty accident registers, fewer emergency calls, and hospital wards that never receive crash victims because a tragedy was prevented.”
Following the success of the Kugbo intervention, the FRSC high command announced that it is working towards replicating the restriction formula across other high-risk highways in the country.
“It is strongly envisaged that with the Corps’ renewed drive and commitment towards achieving a permanent safer motoring environment along the Kugbo corridor, similar impacts will be felt across the FCT and other corridors, nationwide.” Ohaeri said.
