No implementation Of 40% IGR, Mamman assures universities

The Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has said that the directive for public institutions to pay 40 per cent of their Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) would not be implemented.

Making this announcement at the convocation ceremonies held at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan, Mamman revealed that the Federal Government had engaged with the Ministry of Finance to ensure that this circular did not come into effect.

He saidd: “We are not just making the announcement but we are celebrating the legacy, knowledge, progress, and impact that have profoundly shaped the path of education and development in Nigeria.”

Mamman used the occasion to assure the university’s leadership that the administration was fully conscious of the importance and quality of education in the nation and also committed to encouraging the visibility of Nigerian universities globally.

The Minister noted the government’s dedication to implementing the Education 2030 agenda for development in Nigeria.
He added that the administration’s priority is the academic role for 2063, aiming to produce well-educated citizens empowered by skills and capable of significant industrial evolution driven by science, technology, and innovation.

In addressing challenges in the education sector, Mamman acknowledged the industrial disputes that have affected universities in the past, adding that the government is determined to ensure that universities do not face such challenges anymore.

“Councils for the universities have been constituted as part of the government’s efforts to bring innovation and revive the education sector, including curriculum reviews across all levels from primary to tertiary education.’’
