The National Population Commission (NPC) has registered over 10 million children in three months and has begun issuing birth certificates.

The commission’s chairman, Alhaji Nasir Isa Kwarra, disclosed this at the Asokoro General Hospital in Abuja during a ceremony.

At the event, the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, was represented by the wife of the Vice President, Hajiya Nana Shettima, who presented a birth certificate to the “Baby of the Year.”

Bala Banya, the federal commissioner from Katsina, highlighted the commission’s unwavering commitment to ensuring that every Nigerian child is registered and provided with a birth certificate. According to Banya, the registration process is a strategic input into the national identity system.

“Over the last three months, we have registered more than 10 million children aged 0 to 5 years. This registration process is ongoing, with a renewed focus on registering children under one,” Kwarra said.

Parents and guardians were urged to take advantage of the free registration service provided by the NPC to ensure their children and wards are included in the national data system.

Dr. Telson Ojegun, the NPC’s Director General, revealed plans to establish over 4,000 centres across the nation to bring registration closer to the people and ensure no child is left unregistered.

“By leveraging modern technology, we can ensure that every child’s identity is safe and cannot be duplicated,” Ojegun noted.

He also encouraged Nigerians to register deaths, emphasizing the importance of accurate population data for strategic planning.
