NSCDC arrests 10 for illegal mining in Plateau

The Plateau Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested 10 suspected illegal miners in the state.

The Corps Commandant, Mr. Ishaku Musa, made the disclosure at a news conference on Tuesday in Jos.

He said the arrest was in line with the subsisting order issued by the government, suspending all mining activities in the state.

The commandant explained that the suspects were arrested at Bukuru community of Jos South Local Government Area of the state.

“This afternoon, we are parading 10 suspected illegal miners arrested by our men around the Bukuru axis.

“In spite of the state government’s suspension of mining activities, these suspects continued with the illegal act.
“Their arrest followed a tip-off from officers in our intelligence department.

“We will charge them to court once investigations are concluded,” he said.

Musa explained that items recovered from the suspects included four motorcycles, three generators, five shovels, one water hose, among others.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Gov. Caleb Mutfwang recently issued an Executive Order suspending all mining activities in the state.

The governor cited security challenges and other concerns as the rationale for the suspension.
