The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Command, in Niger, says it has introduced stringent security measures to prevent vandalism of railway facilities in the state.

Mr Haruna Zurmi, NSCDC Commandant in the state disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Minna on Wednesday.

Haruna said that the measures would make it very difficult for any person or group of people to vandalise public property.

” We have also reached out to communities and religious leaders along rail lines to expose any person found tampering or moving with vandalized railway facilities or critical Assets and infrastructure.

“We have also made available telephone numbers to community leaders to report any person with questionable character for prompt security actions, “he said.

Zurmi said that the command came up with the strategies to track down vandals across the 25 Local Government Areas of the state.

He said that the measures put in place would make it difficult for vandals to operate in areas within the supervision of the command.

“We have been making efforts to protect government infrastructure in Niger and we will do everything humanly possible to achieve the set objectives.

“We have introduced foot patrol along railways to ensure the safety of its facilities,” he said.

Zurmi appealed to residents of the state, especially those at living within railway lines to be vigilant.

“The Federal Government invested heavily in railway infrastructure to ensure that our country is developed,I see no reason why some individuals derive joy in stealing the railway material, “he said.
