NSCDC seals 80 illegal private security companies in 10 months

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Lagos State Command, on Thursday said it had shut 80 illegal private security guard companies in 10 months.

The NSCDC State Commandant, Mr Gabriel Abafi, who made the disclosure while speaking with newsmen at the command, said the companies were closed for operating with expired licences.

“We have closed 80 private security outfits in the state for failing to register with the government or operating with expired licences.

“Some of them are operating with expired licences, while others did not register their companies,’’ he said.

He warned private security organisations operating in the state to renew their licences without delay.

“The corps has the statutory mandate to inspect private security guards’ companies to ensure that they operate legally,’’ he said.

Abafi also said that some of the illegal companies were trying to register their companies legally, adding that registration was ongoing.

He also said that a conference would be held in November to ensure a better synergy between the corps and the companies.

“The Chief Executives Meeting will come up on Nov. 6, where all operators will rub minds together with us on how to improve on security services.

“The NSCDC is also mandated to protect critical infrastructure, national assets and protection of the civil populace,’’ he said.

Abafi said the corps would not relent in its effort at checking the activities of illegal private security guards and also curb the activities of vandals.

“The private security guards are also doing their best in ensuring security by giving us information about any illegality or suspicious movement in pipeline areas,’’ he said.

Abafi also said the corps had made progress in disaster management and peace and conflict resolution within the state.
