CITING statesmanship and courage, the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) has lauded President Goodluck Jonathan and President –elect Maj-Gen Muhammadu Buhari for their patriotism and resilence, just as the body called for e- voting in future election.

The NSE President Ademola Olorunfemi noted “We salute Buhari’s courage and resilience and commend President Jonathan’s acceptance of the outcome of the election and enjoining his party and supporters to accept defeat.

“We enjoin the President-elect to engage with the NSE as partners-in-progress, to deepen the sustainable development of Nigeria.

We urge him to provide the necessary political will for the implementation of the Nigerian Content policy of Government; a precursor to human capital and sustainable development by the deliberate patronage of the services of Nigerian engineers and Made-in-Nigeria Ggoods,” Olorunfemi added.

NSE also applauded the Prof. Attahiru Jega led- Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC) which through its principled and focused chairman, redeemed Nigeria’s image in the comity of nations.

“Jega stood firm on integrity in the face of avalanche of intimidation, cool and calm under unbridled last minute provocation,” he said. NSE urged INEC to embrace e-voting in future elections, as it has in the last three years partnered NigComSat and deployed e-voting in conducting polls into its executive committee. Olorufemi further said, “The use of e-voting will bring about transparency and considerably reduce post-election petitions and conflicts.

The time for us to discard the old- fashioned voting system characterized by multiple voting encouraged by desperate political office seekers is now. With the e-voting system, results are available real-time via the Internet.

Observers and voters can also view the election results real time from their homes, offices or anywhere in the world using web-enabled devices such as PC, laptops, phones or IPad by simply logging onto the designated website.” He also highlighted another benefit of the e-voting system which is speed, and results can be obtained are accurately tabulated. It reduces the risk of human and mechanical error and movement restriction.
