NUC rates Nigerian graduates among global best

EducationThe Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. Julius Okojie, has said that products of Nigerian universities are among the best in the world.

Okojie, who disclosed that the standard of Nigerian universities was high in spite of their low global ranking, added that the ranking of Nigerian universities had also improved.

He said: “Our graduates can compete with the best in the world; you can find them in the best universities across the world and they are doing well.”

It would be recalled that Journal Consortium, which released its ranking for the year 2015, placed University of Ibadan (UI) at the eighth position while six South African universities made the Top 10. The second Nigerian university, University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) managed to make the 13th position.

The NUC boss, who emphasised that there are no illegal universities operating in Nigeria presently, said the commission would organise a workshop to sensitise universities on convocation, appointments and award of honorary doctorate degrees.

According to him, there are no reports before the commission at present on violation of rules on award of honorary doctorate degrees.

“If a new Vice Chancellor comes in and he is not coming from a traditional setting, he ought to be sensitised; we have what is called university tradition and he may not know.

“As far as I am concerned, there is no report before me that somebody has awarded doctorate degree without permission from the Senate of such institution and the council.

“We intend to have a workshop for all universities to sensitise them on matriculation, convocation, appointment of vice chancellors and award of honorary degrees.

“Not too long ago, a private university that was going to start matriculation ceremony was also thinking of awarding honorary degrees,” he said.

He said the workshop would address what was required to appoint someone a vice chancellor.

Okojie, who stated that for a university to award degrees, there should be somebody coming from another university to look at the quality of work and students’ projects, said that such outsider could come from within or outside the country, adding that NUC usually requested for external examiner’s report anytime it went for accreditation.
