The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has commended the Kwara State government for its prompt and punitive actions against the school teacher who assaulted a corps member in the state.

The coordinator of NYSC Kwara State, Mr. Onifade Olaoluwa, in a signed statement on Thursday, said that the state’s action has nipped the matter in the bud “and would prevent future occurrences of similar assaults against corps members serving in the state.”

Commending the state government on behalf of the management of NYSC, Onifade said, “The actionable measure put in place by the state government would prevent future occurrences of such misdemeanors against corps members in the state.”

The coordinator, who had earlier described the teacher’s action as barbaric, explained that “the apt action taken by the government has exhibited equity and further reiterated the position of the government on the security and welfare of corps members in the state.”

He also lauded the state governor, adding that the management of NYSC appreciates the Governor AbdulRasaq Abdulrahman-led administration for its continued support for the scheme in the state.

He therefore assured the governor of the uninterrupted delivery of the mandate of the scheme in the state.

Onifade charged all corps members in the state to be law-abiding and maximize the period of national service to contribute their quota to the advancement of the state, enjoining them to build on the various achievements of their predecessors, whom he said made remarkable contributions to Kwara State during their service year.

The corps member was reportedly beaten, with her NYSC shirt torn.

Kwara State government, however, on Wednesday announced the demotion of the teacher identified as Hajia Hamzat Fatimoh Nike, teaching at Government Day Secondary School, Kulende, Ilorin, by two steps and ordered her transfer from the school after an investigation panel found her guilty of beating a female corps member serving at the school.

The government, in a statement by Bola Onile, press secretary of the Kwara State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), said, “The investigative panel set up on the matter found Hajia Hamzat Fatimoh Nike guilty of fighting on duty, use of foul language, insubordination, and disrespect for the national identity, which the uniform of corps members represents.

“Her behavior contravened public service rules, and she has therefore been demoted by two-grade levels.

“The teacher is also to be transferred out of her current school as well as undergo counseling sessions.

“The state government will not tolerate such abuse under any guise. The government deeply regrets the action of the teacher and reassures the management of the National Youth Service Corps that this development does not represent the people of the state and it will not happen again.”

It urged teachers in the state to remain law-abiding at all times by performing their duties in accordance with the laid-down procedures, as the state government will continue to prioritize training on teaching ethics and procedures of service.
