The incumbent Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, representing Agege Constituency 1, was, yesterday, returned as Speaker of the House for the third term.

Obasa emerged during the proclamation and inauguration of the 10th Assembly by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who was accompanied by his Deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, and other top government officials.

He was unanimously elected by the 40 lawmakers, including 19 returning members and 21 new ones that constitute the Assembly.

Other elected members include Noheem Adams as the new Majority Leader, Adedamola Kasunmu (Deputy Majority Leader), Mojeed Fatai of Ibeju Lekki 1 (Chief Whip) and David Setonji (Deputy Chief Whip).

In his proclamation, Sanwo-Olu congratulated the legislators, saying: “The proclamation of the 10th Lagos State House of Assembly symbolises the continuity of a democratic journey, but also the vital role of legislative power in our system of governance.

“The legislature, an indispensable pillar of our democracy, plays an essential role in the journey we have embarked upon. It is the embodiment of hopes and aspirations of our people, a crucial partner in the quest for good governance, and a custodian of our shared democratic values.”

The governor promised to work with the Assembly to drive impactful policies and foster an environment where hopes and dreams of citizens of the state could be realised.

Obasa, in his remarks, described the gathering as historic, saying it was a day he set the pace as the first legislator to be elected a record of six times and the first to be the Speaker for any state Assembly for three consecutive terms in Nigeria.

He pledged his commitment to serve the House with humility, honesty and dedication.

“ I urge my colleagues to join me in this commitment, and together we shall leave a legacy of excellence that generations yet unborn will be proud of,” he said.
