Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevweri, has urged Zenith Bank Plc. to establish a football academy in Nigeria as part of its contribution to grassroots sports development.
The governor made the call in Asaba during the official kick-off of the 8th edition of the Zenith Bank Delta Principals’ Cup Football Competition.
Represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Kingsley Emu, Oborevweri commended Zenith Bank for its consistent sponsorship of the annual tournament, describing it as a model corporate social responsibility initiative.
“The Principals’ Cup has yielded the desired results as many youths have benefited from the tournament,” he said, appealing to the bank to expand its commitment by investing in a football academy to further nurture emerging talents.
Commissioner for Secondary Education, Mrs. Rose Ezewu, hailed the competition as a milestone in the state’s youth development efforts, noting that it promotes talent discovery and healthy competition among secondary school students.
She praised Zenith Bank for its dedication since the tournament’s inception, describing it as “a model grassroots football programme in Nigeria.”
“You have not only invested in sports but also in the future of our children, many of whom have gone on to pursue professional football careers within and outside the country,” Ezewu said.
Zenith Bank’s Zonal Head, Dr. Ifeanyi Attama, reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to supporting youth development through sports and education.
He said the partnership with the Delta State Government aims to unlock the potential of young people, describing them as vital to Nigeria’s growth.
“Education and sports are Siamese twins,” Attama said. “Together, they shape individuals who will contribute to a prosperous future.”
