No fewer than 102 councillors from the nine local government areas of Ogun East Senatorial District have declared their unalloyed support for the Senate aspiration of Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The councillors also endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term of four years in office.
The endorsement motion was moved by the Chairman of the Ogun State Councillors’ Forum, Hon. Faseyi Akindele, and seconded by Hon. Babalola Emmanuel.
The forum said its decision was based on what it described as Governor Abiodun’s “unmatched developmental strides” and “qualitative leadership” across the state.
The councillors emphasized that the governor had transformed Ogun State in key sectors, including infrastructure, healthcare, the economy and security.
They added that his wealth of experience in governance makes him a suitable candidate to represent Ogun East at the National Assembly.
“We have witnessed the transformative leadership of His Excellency over the past seven years. His ‘Building Our Future Together’ agenda has positively impacted every part of Ogun East. We believe a leader of his calibre should continue to serve at the federal level to deliver more dividends of democracy,” Akindele said.
He also cited the ongoing airport project as a major achievement, noting that it would boost economic activities in Iperu, Ilishan and the wider Ogun State.
“With the airport, Ogun State can now attract increased traffic, which will enhance economic growth not just in the host communities but across the state,” he added.
The councillors pledged their readiness to mobilise support for Abiodun’s aspiration and his eventual emergence as the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking at the event, the member representing Ijebu Federal Constituency, Hon. Femi Ogunbanwo, described Governor Abiodun as a committed democrat with a strong record of performance.
“Our amiable governor deserves to be in the Senate after completing his tenure. He has demonstrated good leadership and allowed opposition voices to thrive in the state. His achievements are unparalleled,” he said.
Ogunbanwo also moved a motion endorsing President Tinubu’s re-election bid, which was unanimously supported by the councillors.
However, Governor Abiodun has yet to officially declare his intention to contest for the Ogun East senatorial seat, currently represented by Senator Gbenga Daniel.
